Sifnos Island Cyclades Apollonia or Stavri, is the capital of the island. It holds the centre of Sifnos and is built amphitheatricaly on three different hills. Cherronissos, which belongs to the wide area of Artemonas, is a small traditional fishvillage, with a beautiful sand beach, otherwise known for its ceramics. It is the largest seaside village and the island's port since the end of the last century. On the left side of the port and on the top of the homonymous mountains one finds the monastery of "Prophitis Elias Troullakiou" and that of "Agios Symeon" which watch over Kamares night and day. At the foot of the mountain is situated the developping quarter of Agia Marina or Pera Panta. On the other side there is the central community, the dock, the stores, rooms to let, and pottery workshops. he two sides of the port devided by the sea, are again united by gold sand on the nick of the bay. The village of Artemonas. It is situated north of Apollonia at a distance of 1,5 kms. It is the real jewel of Sifnos, with neoclassical rhythm mansions, gardens and flowery yards. On the top of the hill, from the old rows of windmills, only two survive in a good condition. From up here the view of Sifnos is panoramic. The viewer can survey other nearby islands, the Castle, the central settlements, even Kamares. In Artemonas, apart from the bakeries, there are confectionaries as well as pottery workshops. Platis Gialos is 15 km. from the port, 10 km. from the capital of Apollonia and is on the southeast side of the island. It has a wide opening to the ocean which helps keep the beach spotless. Vathi is the settlement of potters on the western coastline of the island. The paved roads and new dock make this peaceful seaside community easy to reach. Kastro has been inhabited since the ancient years up until today, it is built on an ancient acropolis, the "asti" as mentioned by Herodotos, and is an open museum. Kastro was the capital of Sifnos during the ancient, the medieval and the newest period until 1836, as well as headquarters of the archdiocese of Sifnos (1646-1859). The visitor walks into Kastro from the old entrances - lodges, the "logie", which were in the past secured and protected by watch towers. At the foot of the hill of Kastro there is "Gialos" or "Seralia". Faros is situated on the southeast coast of Sifnos and is a peaceful fishvillage with picturesque continuous sandy beaches. On the entrance of the port extends the "petrogoleta" of Chrissopigi, rocky islet cut off from the shore, on which is licated the monastery of "Panagia Chrissopigi", the patron saint of Sifnos. |
