Santorini Island Cyclades The island of Santorini belong to the cycladic group of islands located the Aegean sea. The islands of Thirassia, Thira and Aspronisi are the remains of a prehistoric, larger island named Stroggili (the round one) out of its shape, and they are arranged into a ring around an egg-shaped vessel formed when the mid part of Stroggili submerged due to a great volcanic eruption and the inflow of the sea. Thirty five centuries ago a volcano in the Aegean Sea exploded. One of the largest eruptions ever, this volcano spewed ash over the entire eastern Mediterranean region. Hundreds of feet of ash fell. This may be the source of the stories of the disappearance of the mythical continent of Atlantis. This may be the source of some of the Biblical stories of the Exodus. This may have been the reason the Minoan culture in Crete collapsed. In fact, Akrotiri, a Minoan city in the southern part of Thera is currently being excavated, from under volcanic dust, by archaeologists. What's left of the volcano is Santorini, a rounded archipelago of islands about 200 km southeast of the Greek mainland. Santorini is sometimes called Thera, the name of the largest island in the group. Still the most active volcanic center of the Aegean Arc, Santorini's contemporary geography still speaks of once powerful eruptions. Thera is a curl of land around a giant central lagoon - a caldera, actually. This geologic basin was formed as the center of the volcano collapsed. Surrounded by 300 m high, very sheer cliffs, Thera is an ideal safe harbor, no matter what the size of the craft. To the west, protecting the opening of the lagoon, lies the small island of Therasia, also bound by cliffs. Entrance to the lagoon from the Mediterranean Sea is only from the northwest or southwest of Therasia. All of Thera's ports are on the lagoon. Towns cling to the cliffs looking down on the basin and its water, which is about 400 m deep. From the western cliff tops, the island gently flows down to the eastern seacoast. One can see the ancient slopes of the once mighty volcano. Santorini, named for St. Irene, was once known as Kalliste, which means the most beautiful one. And indeed, tourists are drawn to the spectacular beauty of this archipelago, which is the southernmost island group of the Cyclades. An eventful and glamorous nightlife has developed, providing fun and entertainment, day or night. A wine industry thrives on this dry island. Indigenous grapes, cultivated since ancient times, have adapted to early morning dew being their main source of moisture. The resulting wine is said to have a smoky flavor...one more remnant of the island's volcanic past. Among other typical features of the island are the "panigiria" (religious type fairs) or the revival of old customs such as the traditional wedding and the celebration of "vedema" (vintage). The well-know Greek spirit and nightlife are present in Santorini with a variety of live Greek music, bars, clubs with intense or soothing rhythms so that no matter your mood, you will still have a very good time. |
