about Paros Greece

Paros Island Cyclades

Centrally located among the Cyclades Islands, Paros is situated about halfway between Athens and Santorini. This, the third largest of the islands, lies about 8 kn west of Paros. Sometimes the two islands are grouped as one and called Paronaxia.

Paros is formed of one single mountain, alternately called Aghios Elias or Aghii Pandes, that is 88 m high. The landscape slopes evenly from the peak, ending in a rolling maritime plain.
The capital is the port city of Parikia, found on a bay on the northwest shore. This city was built on the site of an more ancient capital. Rocks in the harbor allow only small vessels to enter and dock in this bay. Parikia is picturesque with Italianate homes with terraced roofs. Houses are shaded and cooled by luxuriant vines, and surrounded by groves of orange and pomegranate trees.
Some of the oldest structures in Parikia are two old, old chapels said to be founded by St. Helen, the mother of the Emperor Constantin. The buildings are thought to have been built in the time before Rome adopted Christianity. Other remains - medieval castles, columns, bas relief inscriptions - can be found across the island.
With it's typical Mediterranean climate, hot dry summers and mild winters, Paros is noted for its vineyards. Tobacco, figs and grains are also grown. Crops are raised all through the gently terraced hills.
Paros has become a popular tourist destination. Visitors seek out the fishing villages and especially enjoy the local seafood restaurants.
Conditions are perfect along the Paros beaches for wind surfing and kite surfing. Conditions are so ideal that the Professional Windsurfers Association Championship Grand Prix is held on this island every August.
Modern Paros may be known for windsurfing, but Paros has always been famous, since very ancient through current time, for the Parian semi-transparent marble that is still quarried today.
Naoussa is one of the most beautiful settlements on Paros. It is situated 10 km north of Parikia and, because of its marvellous beach, it shows a great touristic growth. The area has been inhabited since antiquity. During the Byzantine period, there was a Byzantine settlement, while in the 17th-18th century it began to flourish financially. Nowadays, it is a picturesque settlement with narrow pebbled streets, white houses, old mansions and remarkable churches, like the one of Agios Athanasios, Metamorphosi (Transfiguration), Pantanassa, Agios Ioannis Theologos, Agios Nikolaos with a small Byzantine museum, Agios Georgios and, finally, the one of Taxiarchaki. At the entrance of the port of Naoussa lie the ruins of the famous castle of the city, built in the 15th century. What is worth visiting in Naousa is the the beautiful beach of Kolimbithres.
Marpissa is located 17 km SE of the town of Parikia. Marpissa is the main village of an extended area, which is of great interest to tourists. A visitor can get information at the County Office at the central square of the Three Mills of Marpissa. Marpissa got its name after the daughter of the river god Evinos. To the east of Marpissa there is St. Anthony hill, on the top of which the monastery and church of St. Anthony are built, while on its slopes there are the ruins of a venetian castle. It's an area with a wonderful view of the Aegean sea as well as of the surrounding villages.
