Lefkada Ionion Islands lefkada, An Ionian Island Close to the Greek Mainland Imbued with legend, Lefkada is the site of Sappho's tragic suicide, and of Neolithic and Copper Age sites. Nearness to the mainland adds legend - was Lefkada once part of the mainland? Recently opened roads have given visitors access to some of the most remote, most beautiful of the Greek beaches. Approximately 580 BC, lyric poetess Sappho leaped to her death from atop shear, white cliffs, because of a thwarted love. She fell from the 30 m high cliffs in lefkada, according to the legends. Then the island was named for those same white cliffs. Stories glimmering in that place between history and myth link Lefkada to Aphrodite, Greek goddess of love, and to Odysseus. There is some evidence indicating that Lefkada is the actual home of Odysseus. Other history glimmering in through scientific investigation finds traces of Paleolithic settlements sating to about 8000 BC. Then, 6000 years later, Lefkada was home to Copper Age people. Archaeologists date their sites to about 2000BC. lefkada, an Ionian Island also known as Leucas, is very close to the mainland. Another legend tells us the island was once attached to the mainland. This is the root of speculation: is Lefkada Homer's Ithaca? Supposedly the first inhabitants transformed Lefkada into an island by digging a trench. Geographers and Hydrographers conclude Lefkada is separated from the mainland by a natural channel which changes through time as it is subject to natural silting. Today the island is connected to the mainland by a causeway, a floating bridge, a draw bridge, an undersea tunnel and frequent ferries. The fourth largest of the Ionian Islands, Lefkada has 117 km of coastline, noted for its many inlets, deep bays and calm waters. Beaches have been naturally carved out of the limestone mountain, and are framed by cliffs. The rest of the island is very green, covered with small pines and cypress. The capital city, lefkada, is on the north of the island. Spectacular scenery, Italianate homes with tiled roofs, lively streets and a burgeoning night life invite many visitors to linger. Just to the south, Vasiliki lures windsurfers. The west coast offers calm sheltered warmth for sailors and other water sports enthusiasts. Pale gold of the beaches adds to the beauty. The western coast, looking out over the Mediterranean Sea, is also home to numerous beaches with pale sands. But this unsheltered side has powerful waves. Driving over narrow island roads, through olive groves and endless hills, travelers can find the best beaches in Greece. In a remote southwest corner, Porto Katsiki has been voted the most beautiful beach in all of Greece more than once. Since a road opened in the mid-1990's, Porto Katsiki has become a premiere tourist destination. The gorgeous beaches are accessed by 347 steps hugging a cliff. Once there, beach goers are rewarded with clear waters and dramatic sunsets. Porto Katsiki is named for goats. Local shepherds once bathed their flocks here. |
