Going back in history In Kythnos Important people, like the historian Agisidimos, and the painters Timanthis and Kydias, became famous in ancient years. Going back in history, we learn that Kythnos was named after Kythno, the leader of the Dryopons, people who came from Evia. However, the four graves found in the area of Maroula near Loutra are clear evidence of human presence in the Aegean region, proving that the island was populated during the Mesolithic era, between 9500 and 8500 B.C. The people of Kythnos took part - along with most Greek cities - in the wars against the Persians while later the island was conquered by Romans and Franks. The Kythnians also participated in the Greek revolution against the Turks. Around 1823 according to historical sources, one quarter of the population was wiped out by the plaque. The island, like the rest of Greece suffered terribly during the German occupation in the Second World War (1941-1945). However the surrender of the Italians in 1943 became the starting point of the local resistance against the enemy, something which was officially recognized by the Greek State. |
