Ios Island Cyclades According to tradition, the island of Ios is considered to be the homeland of Homer's mother. Today's town of Io is built on the ruins of the ancient city of Io. Ios entered into the Cyclades at the start of the 13th century A.D. In 1537 it was occupied by the Turks but was eventually freed in 1832 along with the rest of the Cycladic islands. IOS FESTIVALS "HOMEREIA" (THREE DAYS) To honour the poet Homer,who, according to tradition is buried on the island Cultural and sporting events,celebrations,with exhibitions of folklore material-painting Sports and dance teams and groups from the Cyclades take part and the events are attended by leading figures from the world of culture and the arts. Information: Port Authority of Ios, tel.(22860)91.264. The climate of Ios is temperate oceanic. The summers are refreshed by the "Meltemia" or northerly winds that blow between mid-July to mid-September. Winter is mild and usually dry. The autumn is also mild with the period between September and October being referred to as a "small summer". The rains start sometime after mid October. |
