Evros Region of East Macedonia & Thrace

The Prefecture covers an area of 2,543.1 square kilometres, It has a population of 110,828 (NSSG, 2001) and is divided into 9 municipalities and 3 communes. The most striking features of the region's landscape is the contrast between the Rodopi mountain mass in the north and the huge plain of Komotini, which covers all the central and southern area except the Ismaros mountain range in the south-east.
The capital of the prefecture of Rodopi, Komotini, has a population of 43,326 (NSSG, 2001) and is home to the Regional Authority of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. The administrative centre for the whole region of Thrace and the home of the Democritus University of Thrace, Komotini is a modern urban centre enjoying continual growth in all areas of community life.
The archaeological site of Peritheorio was built by the Emperor Anastasius I (491-518 AD) as a staging point along the Via Egnatia, and the city was named after the emperor (Anastasioupolis). At various points in the fortifications there are monograms dating from the Paleologue period, while in the southern section of the wall we can still see the gate leading to the city harbour at the northern end of the adjacent Lake Vistonida. The city's name was changed to Peritheorion at the time of the Emperor Andronicus III Paleologos (1328-1341).
The city-state of Maroneia was founded by colonists from Chios in the first half of the 7th century BC. Its position was ideal for the growth of commerce and shipping. It had its own harbour (4th century BC) whose remains can be seen next to the contemporary breakwater of Agios Haralambos. The prosperous city was a democracy and member of the Athenian League. Its fortifications extended over some 4km, beginning at the harbour and ending at the highest point of Mt. Ismaros, Agios Athanasios, where the acropolis stood. During the Hellenistic period the city was ruled by the Macedonians.
Originally able to seat 1,200-1,300 spectators, all that remains are 3 rows of seats, the orchestra area, a run-off channel for rainwater and fragments of the stage. In Roman times a new stage was constructed, while the theatre itself was used as an arena. A short distance west of the theatre is the Sanctuary of Dionysus (4th century BC). At Palaio-pigada, next to the road leading from Maroneia to Ag. Haralambos, the remains were found of a late classical house with internal courtyard and peristyle. At Ag. Haralambos, close to the harbour, a monumental Roman propylon was found (124-125 AD), dedicated to the Emperor Hadrian (117-138 AD), while a few metres to the east a Roman grain store was found and the marble-paved part of a street, probably the main street running through the agora.
In Byzantine times Maroneia contracted in size, although it was still one of the region's more important strongholds. The episcopal church of the city (11th-12th century AD) has been found at Agios Haralambos; it is built to the plan of a four-column three-aisle cruciform inscribed church, with a synthronon for the arch-priests in the recess of the sanctuary. The church was built on the remains of a smaller, earlier church dating from the 9th century AD. The episcopal church is overlooked by the square tower, 11 metres in height, from the Byzantine fortifications of the city, while at Palaiohora, close to the harbour, there are the remains of an early Christian basilica from the 6th century where a mosaic floor was found decorated with the design of horizontal and vertical knots.
