Evritania Sterea Ellada Deep in the heart of Roumeli Evritania with the majestic mountains, the beautiful ravines, the famed rivers, the traditional communities, you will find a city voted by the committee of Ounesko to be one of the five most clean in the world, and first in all of Europe. In Karpenissi and the surrounding area you will enjoy the natural forests, clean air and water by taking part in many activities such as White Water Rafting, Kayaking in lake Kremaston, or in the rivers Acheloos, Tavropos and Trikerioti, as well as hiking in the peaks of the Evritania mountains. It is 9km from Karpenissi, on an altitude of 1020m. It is amphitheatrically built on a hillside. It has one of the biggest snow period in Evritania and one of the lowest month average temperatures. It is one of the biggest villages of the Municipality with a population of 477 villagers. There is a Nursery and an Elemantary School as well as many other tourist facilities. It is well known for its rich production in chestnuts and beans. There are also springs of unexploited sulphur waters and unexploited areas of coal in rania, erakia and Trifillies. Landscapes of natural beauty: The chapel of Agia Paraskevi (1850), in "Platanias", "rania", "alialona" (ruins of an old watermill). In the central square of the village we find the Church of Agios Nikolaos of Vouneni. The base of the Municipality of Potamia. It has a big number of picturesque alleies and alot of tourists. There is the old church of Agia Paraskevi, which was built 150 years ago, as well as a newly built church, of Byzantine rhythm of Megalochoritis "Agios Gerasimos o Neos", who died suffering (3/7/1812). there is a Popular Library and a useum of Popular Art. In Gavros there is the Church of Panagia Proussiotissa and the Trout Fishery Station. Near the village of Megalo Chorio there is a location called Lakkomata", in which we find a monument dedicated to the battle of Kaliakouda which took place on August 28, 1823, as well as a beautiful chapel of the Virgin Mary (Panagia). On the entrance of the village there are 7 fountains with stone made cups. It is located on a panoramic position between thick forests of perennial fir trees, thick bushes of aromatic plants and plane trees next to the waters of Krikellopotamos river. The Cathedral Church of Agios Nikolaos is one of the most beautiful churches of Evritania. In krikello a battle took place with the people of Aetolia and Evritania vs. the Gauls in 279 B.C. in the location "Kokkalia", which took its name after the big number of human bones ("Kokkalo": Bone) found in that area after that battle. Remarkable village with wild beauty and a well known monastery. It is 33km from Karpenissi, on an altitude of 960m. On the way to Proussos we find the "Home of the River" a location opposite of which we find "ipoma", a hole on the opposite mountaintop, from which came, according to the tradition the icon of the Virgin Mary (Panagia). A bit further, there is a small icon, where we find the tracks of Panagia". The Monastery features an interesting Museum with many exhibits. It celebrates on August 23, the day on which the icon was found. You can also visit the the Clock of the Monastery. |
