Stira have a recorded history since the very first sunrise over the deep blue of the Aegean Sea. According to Stabo, Stira was inhabited by a civilisation, which came from Tetrapolis of Marathonas. According to the mythology, Stira were built by the Driops, a tribe that Hercules drove away from the mount Parnassos. During the Middle Age Stira passed from the hands of the Byzantines to those of the Franks, who inhabited the Castle of Armenon. The citadel of Stira is a characteristic example of that Castle. Homer records in "Iliad" the participation of the town in the campaign against Troy. Other historical sources mention the participation of Stira in the naval battles of Artemisio and Salamina, the Battle of Plateis and the campaign in Cicily. Stira, during the Turkish Occupation offered alot in the battle for the National Liberation. With the nation's liberation, Stira became the capital of the Municipality in 1835. In the Greek Mythology there are three different versions concerning the foundation of the city of Kimi. The first says that Kimi was an amazon competitor of the amazon irina who conquered the whole east side of the Mediteranean. Kimi in order to establish her power in the Aegean Sea founded the homonymous city on the east coast of Evia. According to the second version, the name of imi comes from the word "kima":wave because of the relationship of the citizens with the waves, the winds and the sea. The third and last version mentions that Kimi came from the word omi ("komopoli":large village) according to the vocal change: omi - oumi - imi. Up until today the local call their city of Kimi as as Koumi and the citizens are called Koumiotes. The dwelling of this area is established since the 6th century b.C from different clues (fortification, walls). During the Byzantine Period Kimi lives in the dark. But there are ruins of towers and castles dated back in the Years of the Frankish occupation in other words from the year 1024 and after. During the time that the Turks seized Greece, Kimi, along with the rest of the island of Evia was conquered as well. In 1688 the Enecians, next to the citizens of Evia, attacked against the Turks. But that failed effort led the Turks to set fire in Kimi and ruin all the filed documents of the area. Few days before the revolution against the Turks around the year 1812, Kimi was inhabited by 280 families. In 1820 according to some documents, 380 families paid taxes. After the foundation of "Filiki Heteria" (Society of Friends), many citizens of Kimi took part in the organisation. they started making war equipment and found themselves ready for the revolution. Marmari's name comes from the famed marble of the area. The Dryopes were the people who first inhabited the area of Karistos. The Dryopes were Pelasgoi and worshipped the gods Zeus and Hera.
