Etoloakarnania Sterea Ellada HISTORY OF NAFPAKTOS 1114 b.C.: Installation of the Hercules Tribe in Nafpaktos, a naval lord's settlement. Expedition in Central Greece under the leadership of Ozilos. -454 b.C.: General Tolmidis with 50 athenian Triremes dominates Nafpaktos, sends away the Lokres and installs the Refugees from Messinia. -396 b.C.: Nafpaktos is given back to the Lokres , later to the Achaeans , the people of Thiva , and ends in the hands of Aetolians. -146 a.C.: Submission to the Romans. -553 a.C.: A terrible earthquake ruins Nafpaktos. -1204 a.C.: It becomes part or the domain of Epirus. -1338 a.C.: It is dominated by the Albanians and later by the Venecians. -1407 a.C.: The town is being renovated and fortified by the Venecians. -1499 a.C.: Submission of the town by the Sultan Vayazit. -1571 a.C.: The famous Naval Battle of Nafpaktos with the victory of the Christians. -1692 a.C.: Chalaeel Pasha conquers Nafpaktos. -1700 a.C.: Carlovic convention where Nafpaktos is given to the Turkish. -1829 a.c.: Big naval and land forces battle the Turkish and Albanians out of the town and liberate Nafpaktos. The city of Nafpaktos Built on the mouth of the Corinthian Gulf, carrying a history of 3.500 years, Nafaktos is the jewel of Aetolia. It was the Pelasgi first who fortified the city by constructing a wall using huge rocks, on the top of the hill. Later the Dorians, the Romans, the Byzantines, the Enecians and the Tourkish added fortifying works offering the city a unique castle in Europe with 5 defensive zones, from the port to the top of the hill. The statue of the hero Georgios nemogiannis decorates the battlements of the castle, in the Venecian port of the town, where the Tourkish had hung his dead body. |
