Oinousses Island Dedecanese Oinouses is a group of nine islands found between the island of Chios and the Asian Minor peninsula of Erithraia. In the ancient years the islands are mentioned with the same name by different writers. The name "inoessa" means rich in wine and that, combined with the existence of ancient ruins in Marmaro led some people to believe that the islands, during the ancient years, were inhabited by dwellers who owned vineyards. In the following centuries, Oinouses must have had the same luck with the island of Chios. In 1566, both Chios and Oinouses were occupied by a Turkish admiral named Piali Passas. In November 20, 1912, the Turkish Domination in Oinouses ends. The Monastery of Evangelismos is on the NW side of Oinouses in Tselepi which is 5km from the town of Oinouses. In the centre of the yard it is located the Monastery's Catholic, dedicated to the Annunciation of the Virgin. The mural of the Annunciation of the Virgin, is a work of Fotis Kontoglou. In the Monastery there is also a grand collection of paintings made by Kontoglou which come from teared down murals from the privet chapel of the foundation family (Pateras family) with whom the artist held strong spiritual bonds. The Church of Agios Nikolaos In 1924, the today's church of Agios Nikolaos was built on an older one-roomed church, following the prototype of the Metropolitan Temple of Chios. The construction finished in 1952 with the creation of a bell-tower. THE CULTURAL CENTER OF OINOUSES "GEORGIOS LEMOS" In 1990, the "Leon Lemos" Foundation funded the Cultural Center of Oinouses Georgios Lemos", which has plenty of cultural activities, by providing danse, music, photography, theatre, cinematography lessons a.o. It is located in the old elementary school, it has modern equipment, a cinematography room, another one of multiple use, a library and a parlour. |
