Drama Region of East Macedonia & Thrace The Prefecture covers an area of 3,468.3 square kilometres; it has a population of 103,975 (NSSG, 2001) and is divided into 8 municipalities and 1 commune. The geographical landscape of the Prefecture is dominated by the massive Orvilo, Menoikio, Lekani and Falakro Mountains, which - together with the Drama mountain range - cover the largest part of the northern and central areas of the Prefecture, while the plain of Drama extends to the south. The city of Drama, administrative capital of the Prefecture, has a population of 42,501 (NSSG, 2001); over the course of the last century it underwent considerable development, with dramatic changes in its character and appearance. In the town centre, south of the Agia Varvara park, archaeologists have uncovered the 'Arkadiko' prehistoric settlement, which was the core of the town's first human habitation dating back to the middle of the 6th millennium BC. Moving into historical times, the town continued to be inhabited in antiquity, probably known by the name Draviskos. Drama enjoyed considerable prosperity during the mid-Byzantine period and evolved into a powerful stronghold of major strategic importance and commercial interest. Remains of the Byzantine fortifications, dating from the 10th century AD, can still be seen in the town's historic centre. The modern town of Drama is enjoying rapid growth as the administrative, cheap and cultural centre of the Prefecture. The city of ato Nevrokopi is found in the plain of the area. Kato Nevrokopi was recommended initially in 1919 as the community of Zirnovou and then in 1927 was renamed to Kato Nevrokopi. People of Kato Nevrokopi as well as people of the region lived under the Bulgarian oppression. In the city there are traditional houses next to modern houses. Today it constitutes the center of the new extended Municipality because traditionally it was the administrative, cheap and cultural centre of the area. (2.158 residents) At the summer the interest is focused in the cultural events such as the feast of AKRITION the FEAST of POTATO. he landmarks that have suffered the minimal human intervention, are the post byzantine monuments, the churches, the beautiful forest which is absolutely accessible, the provincial road network that leads to the entry and many other which will be exciting for you to discover. In the prefecture of Drama the tradition of the 'Arapides' is celebrated on the Feast of the Epiphany in the village of Monastiraki and on the following day, 7th January, in the village of Volakas. The tradition has its roots in the Dionysiac cult of the ancient Anthestiria and was intended as a fertility rite to bring about plentiful harvests and increase in the flocks and herds. The same festival has also survived in Nikisiani, in the prefecture of Kavala, where it is celebrated on the Feast Day of John the Baptist. The meeting of Sarakatsanon is realized every year at 20 July, the day of Prophet Ilias, in the forestal village of Elatia. People celebrates with songs, dance and food, two weeks before the meeting. On 2nd May, the Feast Day of Agios Athanasios, traditional horse races are organised at Doxato, Drama. The custom dates back to the Greek people's struggle for liberation from Turkish rule. |
