Donousa Island Cyclades The first resident of the island, based on mythology, was Memvliaros who travelled with Kadmos in search of Europe. That is why in ancient times it was named Memviaros or Vliaros. Apollo and Artemis were worshiped here. In Donousa, after the Phoenicians, settled the Dorians in the 8th century B.C. The island underwent many of the hardships of the rest of the Cyclades islands throughout the centuries, and was abandoned for many years due to its constant attack by pirates. During the Franc rule it was periodically ruled by various Enetic houses (Foskolos etc.) until 1537, when it was attacked by Chairentin Barbarosa. Before 1940, Donousa was used as a place of exile. The Dorians built this city in 1000 B.C., on the mountain Kastelli (327 m.), in Katelimatsa. Today few ruins and statues remain. CULTURAL EVENTS OF ANAFI "CULTURAL EVENTS" At the monastery of Kalamiotissa, the festival of the Virgin Mary is celebrated on the 8th of September. During the celebration, besides the island residents, many worshipers travel from Santorini by boat. Traditional dances are enjoyed, and food and wine are offered to those who celebrate. ANAFI TRANSPORTATION Donousa can by reached by ships leaving Piraeus (distance is 150 n. miles) The trip is approximately 11-12 hours, depending on the route, and the winter months have less scheduled trips than the summer months. Local routes In the summer Donousa is also reached via Santorini. The duration of the trip is 1-1.5 hours. Many Cycladic islands, as well as the Dodecanese islands may be reached from Donousa. The interior of the island can be travelled by car, by foot or by the traditional island buggies. The wonderful beaches can also be reached by small boats. |
