Argolida Peloponese After a swim in Arvanitia, or the nearby Karathona, relax over a good meal in one of the many taverns in Nafplio and prepare yourselves because in the evening the city transforms into an endless promenade. As soon as the afternoon sun begins to set, the city looks like a colorful human beehive full of tourists, permanent residents, Greeks and foreigners who have settled here from all over the world, making beauty their country. From one side lies the old city with is numerous tile-roofs interrupted here and there by perennial trees' tops, the churches' belfries with the unique Bourdzi standing like a stationary ship admist the waters of the Nafplio Gulf and the beach of Arvanitia which hides under the dominant presence Of Palamidi, which will be our next stop. Leaving Asini we reach the popular and well-Known tourist resort, Tolo. Built practically on the beach, the traditional taverns and restaurants, bars and clubs playing both Greek and foreing music, create a cosmopolitan atmosphere to satisfy all tastes and ages. Located in the most charismatic position, in the midst of the peninsula's plains, Kranidi today, - the capital of Ermionis - is built on the boundaries of the ancient city of Masitos, which also included the area of today's Kilada as well as a section of the near by community of Fourni. Portoheli is located opposite to the ruins of Alieon. It is a place where a visitor can find practically everything he wants. Luxurius hotels, all kind of sea sports, restaurants, traditional taverns for ouzo and mezedes, cafes, bars and night clubs. Built in the ancient hillside Pronos, it slides down smoothly to the sea which embraces both its sides, creating Limani in the north and Mandrakia in the south. The visitor after enjoying some ouzo accompanied with octopus in the village of his choice, can start getting acquainted with Ermioni by making a tour of Bisti. Argos is the best starting point from which to visit important historical and archaeological sites but also to explore its beautiful idyllic landscapes. Right in the middle of a dreamlike but nevertheless wild landscape, which softens as one heads down south towards the Argolic bay, reigns the mythical Mycenae Acropolis which has the absolut control over the valey of Argos. On the ridges of Mount Akra with pine trees descending from its sides all the way down to the waters of Epidauros's bay, the city of Ancient Epidauros is built where the actual ancient civilization of Epidauros flourished, not far away from the Sanctuary of Asklipios and the wellknown ancient theatre. Drepano which is the seat of today's Municipality of Asini, combines the endless deep green of the tangerine trees with the soft blue waters of Plakas' beach. There are many hotels by the sea front, organized camping and many rooms to rent. The traditional taverns in the main square of the village are definitely the place to eat. The Asklipio (Lygourio) is one of the most important transportation junctios of East Argolida. It is a 20 minute drive from Nafplio and it is connected with Argolikos and Saronikos bays with a distance of 9 and 14 Kilometers outside Athens. |
