Antiparos Island Cyclades Antiparos lies about one mile east of Paros. Most of the beaches can be reached easily by foot from Antiparos, the only larger village on the island. The most important object of interest of the island is the cave with its stalagtites and stalagmites. It is one of the most beautiful on the entire Balkan peninsula. Cave of Stalactites The cave of Antiparos is located on the hill of Ai Gianni. The descent into the cave offers a spectacular view. Everywhere there are formations of stalactites and stalagmites. In ancient times the island was called Minois or Minos, Paktia, Dimitrias, Kavarnis and eventually Poros, after Poros, leader of the Arcadians who settled on the island. Its first inhabitants were the Cretans, then the Arcadians and in the 10th century b.c. the Ionians who made Paros a commercial and sea force. During the Classical period it realised days of great splendour and many of its inhabitants such as the sculptor Agorakritos, the painters Nikanor and Arkesilas, the poet Archilogos and other distinguished themselves. Paros was in turn subjugated by the Athenians, the Macedonians, Ptolemians and finally the Romans. In 1207 it was included in the dukedom of Antiparos but in 1537 it was captured by the Turkish admiral Heredin Varvarosa who slew some of the inhabitants and sent other to the gallows. The children became Yenitsari (Islamicized, Turkish soldiers) and the rest of the people were sold as slaves. The island was deserted and became a pirates nest. Subsequently, the island was liberated and it became the seat of consuls from France, England and Holland. In 1821 it revolted and was freed like all the other islands of the Cyclades. |
