Andros Island Cyclades Andros is the most northern island of the North Cyclades, second in size after Naxos, it approximately 374 kilometers. It is located south of Evoia from which it is separated by the channel of Kafirea or Kavo D'oro (its width is 7 miles) and north from Tinos. From Tinos it is separated by the Steno ( or Avlona approximately 0,8 miles in width) . The direction of its main axis is North Western toward South Eastern. Its maximum length reaches 39 klms and it width 16,7 kilometers. The total length of its coastal line is estimated to be approximately 177 kilometers. In general the island is mountainous with verdant ravines and valleys and with a plentitude of surface and underground waters springs. The mountainous parts of Andros are four and they are almost parallel arranged. We come across a) Agious Saranda with the hills of Makrotalantos and the valleys of Fellos and Gavrio, b) the cluster of Petalos-Kouvaras were the highest peak of the island is located with the area Katakoilos-Batsi, c) Gerakones with the valley of Mesaria and d) Rahi with the valley of Korthios. The climate is generally healthy and pleasant. Even at the mountainous areas the climate is mild due to the fact that they ares so near to the sea. Autumn is the warmest period after summer. Nevertheless during the summer season the air temperature is relatively low, due to the northeasterly winds. The northern winds have less affect to the western part of the island were the temperatures are higher than those of the eastern side. We also come across snow in the mountains mainly during the months of January and February. Andros is rich in minerals, copper and more scarcely in lead and zinc. It is the Cycladic island with the richest vegetation and without showing homogeneity in all its area, it offers its visitor an assortment of impressions. Vegetation is abundant especially at the eastern side were there are more rainfalls. In the higher areas the flourishing coat is poorer. From place to place you will come across some uncultivated trees. The most vegetation is found at the tip of the island. Andros is rich in minerals, copper and more scarcely in lead and zinc. It is the Cycladic island with the richest vegetation and without showing homogeneity in all its area, it offers its visitor an assortment of impressions. At the most humid areas there is an abundance of myrtles, sedges, laurels, rosebays etc. At the deeper areas of the valleys you will find sycamore trees, poplar, willows, reed trees etc there are also a lot of olive, mulberry, apple, almond fig trees and many other. Andros like all of the Greek area can be named a "botanical paradise" . At least 80 kinds of indigenous plants can be found in the Aegean islands. Andros is rich with plants and especially during spring season it is flooded in wild flowers such as lilies, poppies, orchids, iris and harebells. |
