Alonnisos Island Sporades Alonnisos, third in size among the Northern Sporades, has taken its name after the liberation of Greece from the Turkish tyranny and the establishment of the new Greek nation. In ancient times Alonnisos was called IKOS and it is possible that Alonnisos was once the name of the small nearby island of Kyra Panaya. The relics of the prehistorical times that are found on Alonnisos such as Cyclopean walls, fortifications, Charnel-houses etc. show us how little we do know about the island, the history of which is so old that it is easy to be forgotten as the centuries pass by. It is positively known that like all the islands of the Northern Sporades, Alonnisos was populated by the Dolops, a relation to the tribe of Pelasgi, who with the passing time were changed into dangerous pirates which plagued the Aegean Sea. In the times of the Byzantine Enpire, Alonnisos was flourishing a fact which is made known to us by the monuments of that period, which up to now attract the attention of the visitors. The island was then conquered by the Francs, who completed the existing fortification. Finally, it submitted like the rest of Greece to the Turks. Under the Turkish tyranny, the island was deprived of any special interst. The inhabitants were few and agricultural production small. The island depended more and more on the neighbouring, more populated island of Skopelos. It is only now, in recent years, that the island is flourishing and it owes this to its clear waters, beautiful coastline, pine-clad areas and the hospitality of its inhabitants. ALONNISOS MARINE PARK in Alonnisos, one of the Mediterranean's rarest and endangered mammals has found refuge: the monk seal Monachous-Monachous, which has found the ideal protection in the Marine Park of Alonnisos. With the city's assistance and the sensitivity of the local fishermen, the monk seal can continue to live in harmony in the same area, continuing a tradition of thousands of years. he Marine Park of Alonnisos is today a center of protection not only for themonk seal but for many other mammals and other sea creatures as well.
